R.I.P. Vampira
January 11th, 2008, 11:56 pm    The horror halls of fame lost a legend yesterday. Actress and icon, Maila Nurmi, passed away in her sleep January 10th 2008. Better known as glamour ghoul Vampira, Maila made a name for herself hosting horror movies in the 1950's. Her image, originally a Halloween costume inspired by a Charles Addams cartoon in the New Yorker, inspired future horror hostesses, models, actresses, musicians and more.

Since the Vampira Show aired live in Los Angeles, the programs were never taped, nor shown outside of the LA area. A rare kinescope advertisement for the LA based station and her appearance in Ed Wood's bizarre cult hit Plan 9 From Outer Space are the only footage that remain of Maila as Vampira. So take a moment to pop in Plan 9 and pay homage to horror's first lady of horror.

Rest in peace Vampira.

Vampire trilogy sold for $3.75 million!
July 16th, 2007, 9:00 pm    Ballantine books, a division of Random House Publishing Group, has recently signed a $3.75 million dollar deal for the North American rights to a postapocalyptic vampire trilogy. Writing as Jordan Ainsley, Justin Cronin is the author of The Summer Guest and Mary and O'Neil, which won the Pen/Hemingway Award in 2001. The deal was made based on a 400 page manuscript. CAA is representing the book and hoping for a film option.

The trilogy will be set in 2016 when a government experiment goes terribly wrong, turning death row prison inmates into infectious vampires. Meanwhile, a young girl begins to discover she has powers beyond the norm that may be related to the crisis.

While deals for vampire books are probably a dime a dozen, this one proves significant in just how much it sold for based on only a partial manuscript.
